AKRON, OH, April 03, 2025 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Michael J. Walzer, teacher and coach with Akron Public Schools, was selected by Marquis Who's Who for a prominent feature in the December 2021/January 2022 Northeast Ohio regional edition of Forbes magazine.

While a senior at Walsh Jesuit High School in 1971, Mr. Walzer tutored math at a Catholic grade school. This formative experience inspired him to pursue a career in academia, particularly within the realm of elementary education. In 1976, he joined the faculty at Akron Public Schools in Ohio, where he served as a teacher of mathematics, science and history for fifth through ninth grade. During his tenure, he also excelled as a soccer and track coach in the fall and spring while organizing a table tennis tournament in the winter. He ultimately retired from education in 2006 after accruing 30 years in the field.

Attributing his success to the wisdom of his parents, Robert and Alice, Mr. Walzer has always admired teachers of special and physical education and art as a substitute. He also feels fortunate to have grown up in Akron with his older sisters, Christine and Kathleen, and younger brother, Steve. The friends he made at Kent State continue to expand his horizons in education and beyond. Passionate about the arts himself, he has authored several poems, two of which were published by Eber & Wein Publishers in 2014 and 2017.

Reflecting on his career, Mr. Walzer is particularly proud of his efforts in coaching and leading the Math Counts Team to victory in the district of Northeast Ohio in 1986. He was honored to accept a plaque from a track athlete in 1983 that he still keeps on his wall. Civically engaged, Mr. Walzer has lent his time and expertise as a poll worker in the Summit County Board of Elections since 2016 and has been a donor for the Kent State Alumni Association's scholarship fund. Likewise, he has been a member of the Akron Hiking Club since 2012.

In the coming years, Mr. Walzer plans to continue volunteering at the Mustill Store and Museum along the historic Ohio Canal that once connected Lake Erie to the Ohio River. He lives by the saying, "Any rule without any exceptions is an exceptional rule, and mathematics is full of them." Mr. Walzer notes that this phrase has inspired his math students, who subsequently gained a deeper appreciation for the subject.

EDUCATION HIGHLIGHTS
Mr. Walzer earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education at Kent State University in 1976.

AWARD HIGHLIGHTS
While his career has been abound with highlights, Mr. Walzer emphasizes that a crowning achievement was placing 13th in the State of Ohio as a middle-distance runner during his high school years, for which he received a myriad of ribbons in track competitions.
