Dr. Kio is a distinguished assistant research professor at the University of Maryland, where he has been a pivotal figure for the past decade. His expertise spans aerospace, machine learning, computational biophysics, microscopy and molecular dynamics. He leads research teams and serves as the principal investigator on numerous projects, focusing on optimizing grant impacts and supervising PhD students. He is also an active member of several university committees, including the Academic Procedures and Standards and the Grievance Committee. Additionally, in 2025, Dr. Kio accepted an appointment as an associate fellow of the Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA).

Before his current role, Dr. Kio served as a postdoctoral associate at the University of Maryland from 2020 to 2022 and a research fellow from 2015 to 2016 at the same institution. His career also includes roles as an individual consultant for international organizations since 2015 and a National Science Foundation innovative entrepreneurial research fellow from 2020 to 2022. Additionally, he was an entrepreneurial lead for I-Corps in 2020 and a principal investigator at Cranenano LLC from 2016 to 2020.

Dr. Kio's professional journey began in 2000 with his role as a principal consultant at Jacinth International Limited, where he engaged in aerospace research until 2011. He has also contributed as an instructor for graduate thermodynamics classes at the University of Maryland College Park. His achievements include a patent for hybrid nanocomposite coating formulation in 2020 and recognition as a distinguished fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology in 2017.

Dr. Kio's academic background is extensive, with postdoctoral research training completed at the University of Maryland in 2020. He earned his PhD in aerospace engineering from Cranfield University in 2015 and holds a Master of Engineering in mechanical engineering with distinction from the Federal University of Technology Minna in 2010. Additionally, he obtained a Professional Engineer designation in communication satellite systems engineering from the China Academy of Space Technology Beijing in 2007.

His certifications include being a professional engineer with the Idaho Division of Occupational and Professional Licenses since 2023, a project management professional with the Project Management Institute since 2018 and a chartered engineer with the UK Engineering Council since 2015. Dr. Kio attributes his success to excellent mentorship and his commitment to personal growth.

Dr. Kio's civic involvement includes mentoring through the Institution of Engineering and Technology. His work has been recognized with awards such as the Engineering Fellowship Award from the National Science Foundation in 2022 and 2024 as well as a congressional recognition certificate from the United States Congress in 2023.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Kio has authored several publications, including "Molecular Dynamics of Kapitza Resistance at the Solid-Liquid Interface," published in 2016, and "Equilibrium Molecular Dynamics Modelling of Diffusion and Adsorption of Fluids in Armchair Single Walled Carbon-nanotube," presented at the International Astronautical Congress in 2014.

Outside of his professional life, Dr. Kio is dedicated to his family, which includes his wife and two children. He enjoys activities such as swimming, reading, snorkeling, golf, cycling and hiking. Looking ahead, he aims to enhance his work within academia by building a substantial portfolio and helping his students succeed by establishing strong networks.
