He then earned his medical degree from Rush Medical College of Rush University Medical Center in 1978. Following this, he completed a residency in surgery at the University of Utah Health from 1979 to 1983, where he served as chief resident during the pioneering procedure of the first total artificial heart. He further specialized by completing a fellowship in thoracic surgery at Albany Medical Center in 1986. He is board certified in surgery, underscoring his extensive training and expertise.

Throughout his career, Dr. Rotering has been recognized with numerous awards and honors. He was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in 1978 and has received accolades such as the Outstanding Faculty Teacher Award from the University of Utah and recognition on the Wall of Honor by The American Legion for his service in Grenada and various military operations. His academic contributions include numerous scientific publications that have advanced medical knowledge and practice.
