She began her career at MCI Corporation in 1998 as a software engineer through Sai Software Consultancy. She then held similar roles at Qwest and ChannelPoint Inc. before joining The TriZetto Group Inc. in 2002. Dr. Muppala's tenure at Sun Microsystems from 2003 to 2010 marked a significant period of growth, leading to her position as a principal member of technical staff at Oracle until 2012. She also garnered success at Blackhawk Network, where she served as a principal software engineer and later as a software development architect between 2013 and 2017.

Initially hired by AWS in 2017, Dr. Muppala was a cloud infrastructure architect and solutions architect, roles she held until 2019. She then specialized in AWS machine learning and AI services as a specialist solutions architect and principal enterprise solutions architect until 2022. Dr. Muppala's leadership skills were further honed during her time as the director of engineering at PrimerAI from 2022 to 2023 before returning to AWS in her current capacity.

In preparation for her future, Dr. Muppala received a Bachelor of Engineering in electrical, electronics and communications engineering from Velagapudi Ramakrishna Siddhartha Engineering College in 1996. Her passion for programming was ignited during her diploma studies in computer science at the National Institute of Information Technology. This foundation led Dr. Muppala to pursue a Doctor of Philosophy in computer science from the University of Colorado in Colorado Springs in 2013, followed by postdoctoral work focusing on autonomous job scheduling in multiprocessors.
