Dr. Searle, a distinguished English and comparative literature scholar, has significantly contributed to academia throughout his career. His tenure at the University of Washington began in 1977, where he served as a professor of English and comparative literature until his retirement in 2018. Now recognized as a professor emeritus, this title reflects his enduring influence and commitment to the institution and his expertise in intellectual history. Before his long-standing association with the university, Dr. Searle was an assistant professor of English at the University of Rochester from 1970 to 1977.

Throughout his career, Dr. Searle has been instrumental in shaping academic programs and initiatives. He was the founding director of the University of Washington Humanities and Arts Computing Center. He also served as the director of the Walter Chapin Simpson Humanities Center and the College Studies Program. His role as a founding faculty member in several programs, including the Comparative History of Ideas Program, Program in Criticism and Theory, and Textual Studies Program, further underscored Dr. Searle's dedication to interdisciplinary education.

Dr. Searle's academic journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in English from Utah State University in 1965, followed by a Master of Arts in English from the University of Iowa in 1968. He completed a Doctor of Philosophy in English at the University of Iowa in 1970. Dr. Searle's educational background laid the foundation for his successful career, enabling him to effectively explore and communicate complex ideas. In addition to his academic achievements, he holds a credential as a certified network engineer since 1986.

During his academic tenure, Dr. Searle was affiliated with various professional organizations. He chaired the University of Washington intellectual property management advisory committee and has been a member of the Modern Language Association. As a founder of the Society for Critical Exchange, Dr. Searle has played a pivotal role in fostering scholarly dialogue and collaboration. Beyond academia, he has maintained involvement with civic organizations, such as Action for a Better Community.

Dr. Searle's literary works include editing "Critical Theory Since Plato" and "Critical Theory Since 1965," both influential texts shaping literary criticism curricula worldwide. He is currently working on "Practice Before Theory: Collected and New Essays," slated for publication in 2025. In addition to these endeavors, Dr. Searle is passionate about music and is rebuilding instrumentation for a British brass band.
