Mr. Mortensen, a descendant of pioneer northern Nevada ranchers, has dedicated more than five decades to the reenactment and film industries. As the owner and manager of Horse Thief Canyon Desperados LLC since 2007, he has been instrumental in creating engaging historical reenactments and performances. His company, which he founded with significant contributions from his late wife, has become a testament to his passion for history and performance art. With a reliable team, including notable collaborator Robin Adair Hayes, Mr. Mortensen continues to produce captivating projects, such as a silent movie, Broncho Billy and the Bandits Secret in Niles, California and "It Ain't Moonshine," a full length movie which premiered in 2024.

In addition to his role at Horse Thief Canyon Desperados, Mr. Mortensen has been in the made-for-television movie "Bonanza - Return to the Ponderosa" where he worked with Jack Elam, TV appearances, and live shows at events, including The Reno Gun Show, and with various reenactment organizations and independent films since 1985. His expertise in Western and historical genres is evident in his performances, often writing and adapting material to suit specific situations. His work includes small parts in films such as the made-for-television movie "Bonanza" and live shows at events, including the Oakdale Chocolate Festival and the Gold Rush Days in Old Town Sacramento.

Prior to dedicating himself to the entertainment industry full-time, Mr. Mortensen previously served as a docent for the Virginia City Convention and Tourism Authority between 2005 and 2021, where he shared his extensive knowledge of history with visitors. His dedication to preserving history is further demonstrated through his portrayal of stagecoach and train robber Jack Davis, whom he has performed at significant events since 2010. Mr. Mortensen began his career working on the family ranch, then, four years of service in the United States Navy during the Vietnam War, where he honed skills that would later benefit his diverse career path. He has also won several gun-fighting club competitions. To remain abreast of field developments, Ms. Mortensen is a member of several industry-related organizations such as the Reno Movie Makers, the National Rifle Association, the Oslin History Foundation, the Virginia City Silent Riders and the Black Powder Club.

Mr. Mortensen's background includes an undergraduate degree in soil science and English from the University of Nevada, Reno, which he achieved in 1971. He also completed training in electrical and electronics equipment installation and repair at the United States Navy Electricians Mate Class A School and motion picture operation at the United States Navy MPO Class A. These academic achievements have provided a strong foundation for his varied career. In addition, Mr. Mortensen holds Nevada state and Storey County business licenses. His passion for keeping history alive is a driving force behind his success, along with the support of those around him.

From a formative age, Mr. Mortensen has derived pleasure and fulfillment from Western reenactments and entertainment principles. His early encounter with Roy Rogers and later Slim Pickens sparked a lifelong interest in film and history, leading him to pursue a career that combines both passions. This experience left an indelible mark on Mr. Mortensen, inspiring him to share historical narratives through film and live performances. Outside his professional life, he cherishes time spent with his children, Christopher and Nathan.

Looking ahead, Mr. Mortensen plans to continue his work while preparing for others to take over Horse Thief Canyon Desperados when he eases into a well-deserved retirement. He remains optimistic about the industry's future as society's interest in history grows. His career journey reflects a deep commitment to preserving history through creative expression, ensuring that stories of the past continue to captivate audiences today and beyond.
