As president of clinical enterprise and chief physician executive at Henry Ford Health since 2024, he has overseen clinical operations and strategic direction and led initiatives to enhance health care delivery, patient outcomes and operational efficiency. Prior to his current position, Dr. Munkarah served as president of the care delivery system at Henry Ford Health from 2023 to 2024. He was also the chief clinical officer and executive vice president from 2018 to 2024, where he played a pivotal role in shaping the organization's clinical strategies. For the preceding two years, he held the position of chief medical officer at Henry Ford Hospital and Henry Ford Medical Group.
Concurrent with his other positions, Dr. Munkarah was chair of the department of women's health at Henry Ford Health from 2008 to 2018. Before joining this group, he was the chair of obstetrics and gynecology at King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from 2005 to 2008. He began his career as a gynecologic oncology division director and multidisciplinary team leader at Wayne State University Karmanos Cancer Center from 2001 to 2005.
In addition to his leadership roles, Dr. Munkarah has been a professor at Michigan State University College of Human Medicine since 2021 and a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Wayne State University since 2005. His commitment to education is further exemplified by his involvement with Michigan State University through a landmark 30-year academic partnership established in 2021. This collaboration aims to unify research, education and clinical care capabilities between institutions, focusing on improving health equity and addressing health care disparities.
Furthering his expertise, Dr. Munkarah has been on the board of directors for the American Medical Group Association since 2022 and has chaired the quality committee for Health Alliance Plan since 2019. His contributions to the field have been recognized with numerous awards, such as the Excellence in Health Care Award from the Arab American and Chaldean Council in 2022 and Crain's Michigan Healthcare Heroes in 2021.
Educationally, Dr. Munkarah holds a Bachelor of Science from the American University of Beirut, completed in Lebanon in 1981, followed by an MD from the same institution, obtained in 1985. He completed clinical training in obstetrics and gynecology at Wayne State University School of Medicine in 1992 and further specialized with clinical training in gynecologic oncology at UT MD Anderson Cancer Center three years later. He also holds board certification as a sub-specialist in gynecologic oncology from the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology and is recognized as a physician executive by the American Association for Physician Leadership.
