Mr. Ladd has established a distinguished career in the legal field, marked by his expertise in civil litigation and alternative dispute resolution. He credits the influence of his father, a chancellor for 30 years, as his primary inspiration to become an attorney. As a longtime principal and shareholder at PennStuart, Mr. Ladd primarily handles complex civil litigation. As a mediator, he has successfully resolved numerous conflicts, including those involving products liability, healthcare liability, professional liability, personal injury and wrongful death, commercial disputes, and wills, trusts and estates. Mr. Ladd is licensed to practice law in Tennessee and Virginia, and is admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court, the 4th and 6th Circuit Courts of Appeal, and several U.S. District Courts.
Mr. Ladd earned a B.A. degree in economics, cum laude, from the University of Tennessee in 1982, and his law degree from the UT College of Law in 1985. Following law school, Mr. Ladd joined the U.S. Navy Judge Advocate General's Corps. While on active duty, Mr. Ladd served as a prosecutor, defense counsel, staff judge advocate, and special assistant U.S. attorney. His military service decorations include the Navy Commendation Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, Meritorious Unit Commendation, Navy and Marine Corps Overseas Ribbon with star, and Navy "Expert" Pistol Ribbon.
Mr. Ladd received his primary mediation instruction at Harvard Law School, followed by advanced mediation training at Pepperdine Law School. He is a former commissioner on the Tennessee Alternative Dispute Resolution Commission and served as its interim chair. Mr. Ladd is a Supreme Court of Tennessee listed Rule 31 mediator.
Mr. Ladd has been AV Peer Review Rated (5.0 of 5.0) by Martindale-Hubbell since 2002. He is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America and was awarded a Citation for Exceptional Performance by the Defense Research Institute. In what he considers to be one of his greatest professional accomplishments as a civil defense attorney, Mr. Ladd was the inaugural recipient of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association's Civility and Professionalism Award.
Mr. Ladd's commitment to the legal profession is evidenced by his participation in many legal organizations and bar activities. He is currently a member of the Virginia Model Jury Instructions Committee, the Virgina Bar Association Committee on Federal Judges - Western District, and the Association of Attorney-Mediators. Mr. Ladd is past-president of the Virginia Association of Defense Attorneys, and a former member of the Virginia Ethics Advisory Committee, the Tennessee Supreme Court Advisory Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure, the Virginia Supreme Court Appellate Rules Advisory Committee, the Virginia State Bar Judicial Candidate Evaluation Committee, and the District I Hearing Committee of the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Supreme Court of Tennessee. He previously served as an adjunct professor in paralegal studies and medical and legal ethics. Mr. Ladd has been involved in numerous continuing legal education presentations, regarding such subjects as civil procedure, alternative dispute resolution, evidence, insurance coverage, professionalism and civility, legal ethics, and the regulation of the practice of law.
Mr. Ladd's involvement in civic and charitable pursuits include serving as the former chairperson of A-Leg Up: Therapeutic Riding Center for the Handicapped, Inc., and as secretary of the Bristol Tennessee Regional Planning Commission. He is currently the trustee of the Marian B. Peoples Charitable Trust, which oversees and manages a 500+ acre nature preserve in Bristol, Tennessee.
Mr. Ladd has been married for 40 years and has a son who is nearing completion of medical school. He is a dedicated photographer, a participant in all things outdoors, a voracious reader, and a longtime student of WWII U.S. Marine Corps and Navy history. As a second career following retirement, Mr. Ladd hopes to assist young sailors and marines, particularly those who are embarking on foreign deployments, with associated legal and other issues.
