With over 50 years in the petroleum industry, Dr. Estes is a research engineer who has worked for legacy firms and developed many of the key technologies used in oil drilling. He was a research engineer with Pan Am, and in 1989 he was awarded an honorary doctorate in drilling technology by the president of Amoco Research. Dr. Estes accepted a position as research supervisor with the legacy firm Amoco Production Company in 1976. He served until 1990, when he went on to the position of president with Environmental Drilling Technology in Tulsa. In 1999, he established a private consultancy with Estes Consulting Group, and in 2011, he retired from the oil industry.
When not working with machines and fossil fuels, Dr. Estes has served as an assistant minister of fundraising with Grace International Charitable Ministries, and is vice president of the Evangelical Association. He lent his fund raising expertise to the Democratic Party from 1975 to 1979, but joined the Republican Party in 1980. Dr. Estes is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, the International Drilling Contractors, the American Management Association, Sigma Xi, and the Science Research Society, as well as the American Petroleum Institute, which awarded him a 1991 Service Award, and the American Chemical Society, which honored him with a 1984 Service Award. He has served as technology editor with the Journal of Petroleum Technology, published by the Society of Petroleum Engineers, which presented him with a 1985 Service Award.
