BIRMINGHAM, ENGLAND, May 15, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Losing weight and staying slim could help reduce the risk of contracting cancer, medical experts have revealed.
The research by the World Cancer Research Fund suggests keeping a body mass index (BMI) of under 25 may prevent a total of 18,600 cases of the disease a year.
The likelihood of developing cancers of the breast, bowel, oesophagus, kidney, pancreas, womb and gallbladder could be reduced.
Professor Martin Wiseman, of the WCRF, said: "The evidence that being overweight puts you at increased risk of cancer is stronger than ever.
"The problem is only going to get worse if the number of overweight people continues to rise. This is the reason we recommend people aim to be as lean as possible."
The WRCF estimates that a person at the top of the BMI range is 15 per cent more likely to develop bowel cancer than someone at the bottom of it.
A body mass index of 25, which is calculated by dividing someone's weight in kilograms by their height in metres, is regarded as overweight. A BMI over 30 is clinically obese.
