As longtime NRA Master Training Counselor, T. J. Johnston explains the history of the California assault weapon ban that spread across the nation. Although the news media and law enforcement have had a difficult time determining what an assault Weapon is, under the law, they waged an unsuccessful battle to extend the Federal Assault weapon ban in September 2004. The California ban is still in effect but is rarely enforced. According to Johnston the California law is used mostly as an enhancement to impose harsher penalties for those who commit crimes with banned firearms.
