MANCHESTER, ENGLAND, July 17, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Holidaymakers jetting off to Barcelona this September will have the opportunity to attend one of the city's biggest and most colourful events - La Merce Festival.
With a history dating back to 1902, the festival is held every year in honour of Barcelona's patron saint, the Virgin of Mercy and sees thousands of people descend on Barcelona.
Most of the action takes place on September 24th. However, events are also held during the week before and week after, with everything from spectacular fireworks displays to colourful parades.
The Carrefoc is one of the highlights of the festival. It roughly translates to 'the procession of the fire-breathing dragon' and takes place after dark.
Carrefoc is an exciting parade featuring dragons, devil puppets and eagles. Spectators are invited to watch as performers weave their way through the city's streets blowing fire and dancing.
Those staying in Barcelona hotels will also find plenty of music and sporting events taking place during La Merce Festival, as well as human tower competitions.
Visitors can watch as locals dressed in traditional costumes compete in teams to create the highest human towers. These usually take place in the Old Quarter of the city and often reach eight levels high.
