LONDON, ENGLAND, July 19, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The BBC has unearthed a short video clip of Michal Kaminski, the main voice of the Conservative Party in the European Parliament, referring to gays as "fags". In the clip, recorded in July 2000, the reporter questions whether such language is offensive, to which Kaminski replies, "that's how people speak, what should I say? They are fags."
Reporting from Warsaw, the BBC's Adam Easton says that in devoutly Catholic Poland, where in 2005 prime minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz described homosexuality as a "disease" Kaminski is not considered controversial, and that it is not uncommon to hear even the well-educated refer to gays and lesbians in a derogatory way.
On Wednesday, Kaminski became leader of the European Conservatives and Reformists, part of the eight-nation group that includes the UK's Conservative Party, after Timothy Kirkhope, leader of the 25 Tory MEPs was forced to relinquish the position to him after David Cameron had a furious phone call from Poland's President Lech Kaczynski. Senior Conservative MEP Edward McMillan-Scott was expelled from the party on Tuesday for rebelling against Kaminski's appointment.
