HUDSON, WI, August 14, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Don't be a Johnson.
That's the message the marketing team at Docucopies.com want you to take away from their upcoming TV commercial. And like hundreds of other advertisers before them, they've discovered the best way to deliver a message is often with familiar faces in abnormally funny situations.
The presence of former Timberwolves President Bob Stein and former Timberwolf and Golden Gopher player John Thomas might go unnoticed in other markets. But the Docucopies team take comfort and humor in the idea that some sports nuts in the Minneapolis market might jump to their feet, or drop to the floor with raucous laughter, when they see the two sports personalities in their upcoming television commercial, which has a decidedly comical twist.
The 30-second spot plays out something like this: a group of business people are sitting in a boardroom. The boss (portrayed by Thomas) tells veteran board member Johnson (portrayed by Stein) to get 5,000 copies of their projections by tomorrow. Johnson, a true soldier of the old school, grabs a Yellow Pages and begins looking for a copying company. A younger employee suggests they go to Docucopies.com, but he is quickly shushed by Johnson, who's not about to have his business experience questioned. Undeterred by his skepticism, the young employee brings up Docucopies on his laptop while Johnson continues searching the phone book. The boss is so impressed with how much money they'll be saving, he sends Johnson off on a humiliating coffee run.
The moral of the story? Don't be a Johnson. Go to Docucopies.com.
"It plays out better on the screen than on the page," says Roe Pressley, a member of the Docucopies creative team who wrote the script. "I think people will get a good laugh out of it."
The commercial was produced by Shaun LaBelle, a veteran producer in the Twin Cities area and an accomplished and well-connected jazz musician and producer. He was referred to Docucopies as an independent producer through the local cable company, and when he read the script, he was hooked. He suggested bringing in acquaintances Stein and Thomas as actors, which resonated well with the Docucopies team.
"We hadn't initially planned on having celebrities in the commercial," says Jeff Corbo, marketing director at Docucopies. "That was a nice kicker, and it came together well."
The team was impressed with LaBelle's work, as well as Stein's and Thomas's portrayals, and are eager to see the finished product on the local broadcast before sending it out nationally. The commercial premieres in the Minneapolis area on Tuesday, Aug. 18, on CNN, History Channel, MSNBC, Discovery, VH1, TLC, and Comedy Central.
