MUNICH, September 06, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Beer enthusiasts staying in hotels in Munich this autumn will be in their element, with Oktoberfest due to take place in the city from September 19th to October 4th.
The famous event is a celebration of Bavarian folk music and culture, with around six million people expected to descend on Munich for the festival.
A packed programme of activities will be taking place, beginning with the grand entry of the Oktoberfest breweries, which sees hundreds of landlords and waitresses make their way into the city in horse-drawn carriages and on elaborately decorated floats.
Other highlights include a costume and riflemen's parade on September 20th, which features thousands of people dressed in their regional costumes, as well as dancers, flag-throwers, trumpeters on horseback and marching bands.
In addition, an open-air concert will be taking place in the city on September 27th, with more than 400 musicians set to take to the stage.
Visitors will also find dozens of stalls selling locally-produced gifts and souvenirs, as well as fairground attractions and exhibitions.
Oktoberfest has a history dating back to 1810, when King Ludwig I Princess Therese of Saxony-Hildburghausen and the citizens of Munich were invited to join the festivities.
