USB Phones or VoIP Routers which way for the VoIP User?

When considering whether to switch to VoIP many people instantly come across a stumbling block when they are confronted with the sheer volume of VoIP hardware on the market. Headsets, microphones, USB phones, IP phones and VoIP Routers all compete for their attention and their hard earned cash.

It can often be bewildering as to not only which USB phones, headsets or routers work with which service providers but also whether a USB phone, headset or router is the best choice for a particular user's situation. This problem is only exacerbated when that user has limited technical experience or interest and simply wishes to use VoIP to save money on phone calls.

For example, cheap and user-friendly USB phones are often the most obvious purchase for a new user but they require proximity to an operational P.C. that is not necessary if the user opts for one of a range of seemingly more complicated VoIP routers.
