HOUSTON, TX, October 29, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Thousands of women from all walks of life have looked to breast augmentation to enhance their appearance. Once thought of as a procedure only for the rich and famous, many women from middle class backgrounds have undergone this life-changing procedure. According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, over 300,000 women a year decide to go through with breast augmentation. This makes it one of the most popular plastic surgical procedures. An overwhelming number of women are very happy with the results of their procedure.
Breast augmentation is performed for a variety of reasons, such as underdeveloped, uneven, or sagging breasts. Some women look to breast augmentation to fix a prior unsatisfactory surgery. Some women, such as models or body sculptors use breast augmentation as a means of improving what they already have since all eyes are on them. Whatever your aesthetic goals or reasons for wanting breast augmentation, there are several things to consider.
Breast Implant Types
There are two types of breast implants, each with different benefits.
• Saline breast implants - Saline implants are filled with sterile saline. Saline implants are filled to optimum size after they have been set in the pocket where the implant will be placed. The volume of the implant can be adjusted to meet your specific goals. If an implant leaks, the saline is safely absorbed into your body.
• Silicone gel breast implants - Silicone gel implants look and feel very natural. They come prefilled from the manufacturer. The new generation of silicone implants is much safer than those pulled from the market prior to November 2006. Silicone gel implants may be a better choice for very thin women.
Breast Augmentation Placement
Placement of breast implants is another important consideration. There are two types of placement in the breast augmentation procedure.
• Subglandular - The breast implant is placed above the breast muscle, but below the breast tissue. Larger breast implant possibilities, a more dramatic lift, and a shorter recovery period are some of the advantages.
• Submuscular - Breast implants are placed beneath the pectoralis major either partially or completely. Some of the advantages include a look and feel that is more natural, less likelihood of drooping, and less interference with mammograms.
Breast augmentation procedures basically include incisions in the areola or breast crease, but some plastic surgeons will go through the armpit. The recovery time and final results depend on several factors you should speak to your plastic surgeon about. Different surgical techniques performed by specific plastic surgeons will have different results.
