MARINA DEL REY, CA, December 18, 2009 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Rick Nappi says, "There was a time when people believed that only birds could be affected by the A H5N1 influenza, thus known as 'The Bird Flu'. Influenza A affects wild birds naturally, which only carry the virus and present no symptoms. They can transmit the virus to our poultry, chicken and turkey, and once manifested, up to 90% die," according to Dr. Nappi.
"As time went by, H5N1 became resistant to some drugs used in the treatment of flu, and also started to infect mice and cats. Now, the virus has mutated and can be transmitted to humans from the poultry that shed the virus in their nasal secretions, saliva and feathers. As this continues to mutate it may be possible for humans to become infected and begin a wide spread human-to-human pandemic," Dr. Nappi continues.
Dr. Rick Nappi goes on to say, "It is quite possible that the H5N1 virus could mutate and that could be devastating."
How does the Influenza A Virus Subtype H5N1 spread from animals to humans? According to Dr. Nappi, the 'misprint' changes the surface coat enough it can be unrecognizable to the immune system. This is called, 'Antigenic Drift' and supports why we see influenza strains coming at us over and over again. The flu is almost never the same, so the antibodies our immune system build up from past infections one year can fail to identify the new season's flu (though as long as the change isn't too drastic, we should have partial immunity to it and this supports why the 'winter flu' is a relatively mild disease in most people.)
Dr. Rick Nappi adds, "But flu viruses are extremely intelligent and possess many tricks up their sleeves. From time to time, different flu viruses colonize the same cell. When this happens it becomes a completely new ball game. Their RNA can interchange giant sections like peas in a pod, 'playing happy families'. When this happens the virus swaps traits. If this reshuffling involves the genes that make the virus' coat, this can have devastating consequences for us all. This process is called an "antigenic shift". A virus that possesses the kind of coat suitable only for entering bird cells might suddenly acquire the genes for a coat to unlock human cells. It has at that point, in effect, jumped the species barrier in a single leap. If this happens, brace yourselves for a new and unquantifiable pandemic that will give human life itself a real run for the money," according to Dr. Nappi.
Dr. Rick Nappi goes on to say, "Until recently, the flu virus was fairly harmless in birds. Because these viruses are completely foreign to the human immune system, they are highly pathogenic and can and will, if given the opportunity, kill their host. Scientists once thought bird flu viruses had the ability to infect humans through pigs. We know and science tells us that the lungs of pigs can be infected by both human and bird flu viruses. Therefore science may indicate that the pandemics of the twentieth century started when genes were swapped in pig cells. This is where we came to coin the term 'swine flu'."
"Scientists are now revisiting this hypothesis and have suggested that the 1918 pandemic really started on chicken farms in Kansas, right here in the USA."
Dr. Rick Nappi adds, "H5N1 "bird flu" and "avian flu" could very well be the strain that makes the jump to simple transmission or it may be another of the Influenza A strains. No one really knows yet. But if I was a betting man, H5N1, seems to be the one most likely to make this leap presently. The mode of transmission from birds to humans would be through their feces or respiratory secretions at this juncture. But if it does make this leap and became a pandemic in humans it would most likely be spread through coughs and sneezes, through mutual touching of surfaces and the exchange of bodily fluids" according to Dr. Nappi.
Dr. Rick Nappi goes on to say, "It is my belief that we must maintain a strong immune system at all times, in preparation for these types of viruses and others yet to surface. We cannot continue to play the "wait and see" game with our health anymore. We must take proactive steps."
Dr. Nappi adds, "I developed the Imunx formula to keep MY body at the ready and take it every day as my personal insurance policy. I want to make clear that Imunx or any other formula is not a miracle cure and certainly not the only steps to be considered, but for my money and health, I will take all the insurance I can get to keep my immune system better prepared for whatever hits us all next. If you care for those you love I urge you to become proactive today. Don't wait until you fall prey to these opportunistic predators that cannot be seen or infectious until it may be too late."
