Enjoy Tet Celebrations in Hanoi

Visitors to Hanoi next month should make sure their trip coincides with Tet, the Vietnamese new year festival.

HANOI, VIETNAM, January 23, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- On the streets of Hanoi, the anticipation is growing rapidly ahead of next month's Tet festival.

This celebration of Vietnam's lunar new year takes place across the city and gives people staying in Hanoi hotels the chance to experience some of the country's ancient traditions and customs.

Tet is derived from the Chinese lunar new year, which this year falls on February 14th.

In Vietnam, the festival is known as a time for reuniting with family members, cooking special food dishes and spreading good wishes to friends and neighbours.

The American author Dana Sachs, who wrote the book The House on Dream Street about her time spent living with a Vietnamese family, has described her experiences of Tet in Hanoi.

Writing on the Adopt Vietnam website, she noted how the city becomes "strange and dreamlike" during the period, as time suddenly switches from the western calendar to the lunar calendar.

Flowers are another major part of the Tet celebrations and at this time of year Hanoi is filled with markets selling freshly-cut blooms.

According to the Vietnam and Cambodia blog, some of the best markets are located on the Hang Luoc, Hang Ma and Hang Khoai streets in the central Hoan Kiem district.
