Dr. Dean Toriumi Performs a Facelift Leaving Little Evidence of Any Scars or Changes in the Hairline

"These incisions are designed to create little change in the position of the temporal hair tuft, the tuft of hair in front of the ear that typically is pulled quite high in facelift surgery," Dr. Dean Toriumi said. To avoid changes to the tuft, Dr. Toriumi places an irregularized incision around the temporal tuft to minimize its movement. Because the incision is irregular and closed very carefully, this scar is very difficult to see. To avoid the "wind-swept" look Dr. Dean Toriumi creates an upward pull on the Superficial Muscular Aponeurotic System (SMAS) layer of the face, which prevents the "pulled look" on the corner of the mouth. The upward pull on the SMAS layer gives a noticeable improvement to the neckline and does not create a "pulled look" on the corner of the mouth.

Toriumi typically spends more than an hour closing the incisions during facelift surgery to insure that scars are well camouflaged and easily hidden, even if the patient's hair is pulled up or short. "This involves an extremely precise closure of the incisions. It does add time to the surgery, but is well worth it to the patient," Dean Toriumi said.

"Patients typically look good a couple of weeks after surgery, and their incisions are difficult to find after about six weeks postoperative," Dr. Dean Toriumi added.
