Schlichter, Bogard & Denton - Nutty Guys Voluntary Recall of Butter Toffee Peanuts and Yogurt Covered Peanuts

Nutty Guys is recalling its Butter Toffee Peanuts and Yogurt Covered Peanuts, after discovering insects in some of the products.

GOLDEN, CO, February 26, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Nutty Guys is recalling its Butter Toffee Peanuts and Yogurt Covered Peanuts, after discovering insects in some of the products. About 2,000lbs of the recalled peanuts have been sold. This is a Class III recall, considered unlikely to cause adverse health consequences, and not to be confused with the recent peanut and peanut product recalls associated with Salmonella contamination.

Identifying the Recalled Peanut Products
Nutty Guys products are sold online through the Nutty Guys website, other online sources, and in stores across the country. Both of the recalled peanut products have sell by dates of March 15, 2010 and earlier and both are packaged in one pound, see-through, plastic bags. Recalled varieties are:

- Butter Toffee Peanuts, UPC 8 31852 00261 0
- Yogurt Peanuts, UPC 8 31852 00279 5

The Problem with the Recalled Peanut Products
The defective peanut products were recalled because they may contain live insects and larvae. Insects are a common problem in peanuts and are not considered a serious health threat.

This recall is not linked to other recent peanut and peanut product recalls due to Salmonella contamination. Nor is it linked to the 2009 recall of Nutty Guys pistachios due to possible Salmonella contamination.

What You Should Do If You Have the Recalled Peanut Products
If you have Butter Toffee Peanuts or Yogurt Covered Peanuts that you believe are included in the recall do not eat them. You can contact Nutty Guys for instructions on how to obtain a refund.

Bugs in Food
Live bugs are not uncommon in foods such as grains, nuts, and other dry goods. They are often a problem for people who store food for long periods of time at home. Most do not pose a health risk, but some insects found in food, such as carpet beetles, can cause an allergic reaction or irritation.

The Nutty Guys press release does not state what type of insects were found. Indian meal moths are one type of insect that is often found in nuts. There are some methods available to help keep bugs out of nuts, but most of those methods pose potential health risks of their own or can lower the quality of the nuts. Some methods include:

- Chemical fumigation
- Microwave radiation
- Radio frequency treatment
- Ionizing radiation
- Cold treatment
