WESTON, FL, March 04, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Students who excelled at The Sagemont School are putting their knowledge and training to good use and are already leaving their mark on society. Erica Briceno, class of 2007, is now a Junior at Southern Methodist University. This honors student has received the prestigious Hunt Leadership Scholars Award based on her performance. The award is given to identified future leaders of the 21st Century and covers full tuition and fees including a study abroad program. Erica, majoring in Economics, International Studies and French, recently finished a semester studying in Paris. Dr. Brent Goldman, President of The Sagemont School, explains "Erica was a very hard worker at Sagemont, and she used her opportunities wisely. Erica was a student intern for Congress Woman Debbie Wasserman Schultz for three years." Erica explains, "The Sagemont School prepared me for a world of possibilities. It taught me in and out of the classroom how to be successful not only in school but in life."
Twenty-year-old, Sagemont graduate, Carlos Pena carved his own unique road to Hollywood. At a young age, Carlos was very fortunate to land a role on ER and Judging Amy. After he and his mom became commuters between South Florida and Hollywood, CA, Carlos decided to return home and finish his high school education at The Sagemont School. There he starred in several school drama productions including stand out leads in the musicals Little Shop of Horrors and Once Upon A Mattress. After completing one year at Boston Conservatory, Carlos was cast as a lead in this season's new Nickelodeon series, Big Time Rush, being filmed in Los Angeles. His role highlights both his comedic timing and singing abilities.
Sagemont Alum, Anastagia Pierre, started competing in beauty pageants when she was five. At 14, and a freshman at Sagemont, she won the title of Miss Florida Teen USA in 2004. Two years after her high school graduation, she won the title of Miss Florida USA 2009, and was the first African American to do so. During her reign, she worked closely with the Best Buddies organization as well as Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Anastagia was introduced to community service work during her years at Sagemont as she worked on projects such as Relay For Life & Kid's in Distress. She plans to continue her community service work for organizations dealing with children and women's issues. In April, Anastagia will be competing in the Miss Bahamas pageant. If she wins, she will compete in the internationally televised Miss Universe and Miss World pageants.
Elyssa Goodman, Sagemont class of 2006, graduates from Carnegie Mellon University in May. She is the founder and editor-in-chief of The Cut, Carnegie Mellon's first music magazine (thecutmagazine.com). Elyssa was recently promoted to Style Editor for Her Campus.com, a national online college women's magazine for which she is also a contributing writer, selected from a group of highly accomplished student journalists from across the country. Rachel Simmonds, Sagemont Journalism teacher recalls, "Elyssa was a on the yearbook staff for five years and served as Editor-in-Chief for three years. Her leadership skills and initiative always stood out to me. I have always known Elyssa would be successful."
These recent Sagemont graduates personify the goals of the school to produce stand out leaders by preparing students with strong academics, focused goals and community service experience.
