Ken Duncum's Horseplay will be performed on stage between May 6th and May 29th as part of the Auckland Writers and Readers Festival.

The comedy, starring Toni Potter, Tim Balme and Elizabeth McRae, depicts an imagined meeting between New Zealand literature mavericks Ronald Hugh Morrieson and James K Baxter.

While the writers never met in real life, Horseplay imagines that the pair meet up in Hawera in 1972 - hilarity ensues as the absurdities add up.

"Full of witty and rambunctious language, Horseplay is a cockeyed salute to literary genius and the nature of the creative act," the Auckland Theatre Company enthused.

Tickets for the play can be booked directly with the Maidment Theatre. Adult tickets are priced between $35 and $57, while discounted fares are available for groups of more than six people or senior citizens over the age of 65.

Other Auckland Theatre Company events set to hit the stage in the New Zealand city this season include Stepping Out at the Skycity Theatre in June and a modern-day retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet in July.
