TORONTO, ON, May 17, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Parents throughout the country have been hearing the alarm bells since learning about their children's scores on the federally administered reading tests. The lack of reading comprehension improvement over the past few years has forced parents to seek outside educational help for their children.
According to the National Assessment of Educational Progress, or NAEP, 2009 reading scores from fourth and eighth grades remained stable. These scores failed to improve despite the financial support offered through various government initiatives, such as the No Child Left Behind Reading First Program.
Stuart Ackerman, founder of the online tutoring website, TutorGiant.com, has creatively found a way to help improve those unchanged reading scores.
"I began to search for online reading comprehension lessons and books that I thought would help students improve their reading skills," Ackerman stated, "but when I searched online and through countless bookstores, I couldn't find anything that was unique or effective."
Ackerman, an author and a certified school teacher with a Masters degree from New York State, came up with the idea of creating online reading comprehension video lessons. As a supplementary teaching aid, he also came up with the idea of offering classic novels appended with reading comprehension strategies.
"I used the newest reading comprehension instructional strategies and put them into video format with worksheets," Ackerman explained. "Then, one day, after reading Alice in Wonderland to my kids, I realized that I could combine entertaining classic books with the reading strategies I teach in my videos."
Ackerman's video website, TutorGiant.com, contains over 40 reading comprehension videos with worksheets. Overall, the website offers an impressive archive of over 400 videos and more than 350 free tips. Additionally, Mr. Ackerman, to date, has compiled 30 classic novels, each appended with his unique reading comprehension strategies, and he says that more are on the way to being offered through his website and through Amazon.com.
"As a teacher, I want students to experience quality literature, and at the same time, to learn how to read. My videos and books really complement one another. In the end, these resources should be extremely effective in helping students to improve their reading comprehension skills."
Tutorgiant.com offers hundreds of videos, worksheets, free tips and free educational assessments.
