BARCELONA, SPAIN, May 25, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Barcelona is set to hold its traditional St John's Day festivities in June, with plenty of fireworks and dancing for residents and tourists to enjoy.
It is a long-standing tradition in Spain, which coincides with the summer solstice, to celebrate this saint's day with more gusto than others, but guests at hotels in Barcelona in particular could be in for a treat.
Along with the many fireworks, bonfires and open-air celebrations - known locally as verbenas - there is also a phenomenon called the Canigo flame, which sees a fire lit at the top of this mountain, with all the surrounding communities following with their own fires.
The festivities kick off on June 23rd, with the following day being St John's Day - a national holiday in the country.
"Catalonians celebrate in their idiosyncratic way and Barcelona is one of the most spectacular places to join in the fun," explained What's on When.
To make the night more convenient for revellers, the local council runs metro and tram services throughout the night.
It is free to attend the celebrations, which are held in the city centre as well as in much smaller towns all around Barcelona.
The start and finish times will depend on which party is being attended, but travellers can expect festivities to go on until the early hours.
For more information on this event visit the Barcelona Council website.
If you're heading to the St John's Day this year, we strongly advise that you book your hoteles en Barcelona as soon as possible, given the huge popularity of the event.
