CHICAGO, IL, May 26, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- It seems that LASIK is almost synonymous with eye surgery these days. In fact LASIK is just one of several eye surgeries used to correct refractive vision errors. Another, lesser known but very effective, eye surgery is available that does not use laser technology. CK, short for conductive keratoplasty, is a safer, although temporary, surgery that uses radio wave energy specifically to induce near-sighted vision. You may also know CK by the name NearVision CK. So, how do you know if you are a CK eligible surgical candidate?
Just for Creating Myopia?
Yes, but correcting refractive errors to myopia, or nearsightedness, can make the difference between wearing glasses or contact lenses and not having to wear them at all. The idea behind this method is to leave your stronger, dominant eye able to see distances without correction, and to create good reading vision in your weaker eye so that you do not need reading glasses, either.
So, you can see that this procedure is not for everyone. You must meet a few criteria before you are considered eligible for CK. For starters, if you can answer "yes" to any of these questions, you might be a CK candidate:
- Are you over age 40? CK is an excellent option for people over age 40 who may not qualify as a good laser eye surgery candidate.
- Do you have good uncorrected distance vision in your dominant eye? Not a requirement, but very helpful. This could eliminate the need for corrective lenses for driving, at least.
- Are you farsighted in your weaker eye? This weaker eye will be corrected with CK for reading. As long as you are not too nearsighted, you are still in the game.
- Do you have presbyopia? This is an age related problem occurring in people over age 40 in which the crystalline lens begins to lose its ability to change focus. This is the main reason why people need reading glasses as they get older. NearVision CK often corrects this.
- Have you had previous refractive surgery, such as LASIK or lens implants? These are two of the few qualifiers for people under age 40 and for people who do not qualify for additional refractive surgery.
- Are you healthy and free of chronic diseases such as diabetes or hypertension, or any autoimmune diseases such as Lupus or severe allergies? These diseases can interfere with healing or surgery outcomes. Your ophthalmologist can determine if there are any exceptions that make you eligible for CK.
One possible disqualifier is taking medication that affects your immune system such as steroids or immune suppressants. These medications can alter your ability to heal properly.
Because people are so different, you must have your ophthalmologist examine you and evaluate your medical history and current medications to know if CK is the right treatment for you.
