Dr. Ralan Wong Talks with Cambridge Who's Who about Endodontics, Advancements in Oral Healthcare and the Keys to a Successful Dental Career

Dr. Ralan Wong digs his teeth into dentistry at San Francisco Endodontics

SAN FRANCISCO, CA, June 4, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- For Dr. Ralan Wong, dental healthcare is a labor of love. A fifth-generation San Franciscan, he has made his professional home in central San Francisco's Laurel Village. Dr. Wong, an endodontic specialist, stresses that his practice has the ability to provide dental procedures for patients of all ages. During a recent sit-down interview with Cambridge Who's Who Publishing, he commented: "SF (San Francisco) Endodontics serves the whole community. I've had patients as young as four years old. My oldest patient to date [was] 99 years old." He smiled upon recalling the elderly patient and her unusual medically-related request. "She wanted to actually save her tooth—it was a broken down wisdom tooth. She told me that she had to have all [of] her teeth by the time she turned 100, so we ended up doing a root canal on her. She had it [until] she turned 100 and she lived [to be] 105 [years old]."

Dr. Wong is a charismatic, detail-oriented professional - a perfectionist even, when it comes to dental work and the emerging trends in the field. With nearly 20 years in oral healthcare, he is recognized for his expansive knowledge of endodontics - "Endo," the Greek word for "inside" and "odont," the Greek word for "tooth" - and the various diseases and conditions associated with teeth. Dr. Wong works with patients suffering with pain, sensitivity, swelling, infection and general discomfort. He addresses infected or inflamed pulp tissue as well as tooth decay, which afflicts patients with sensitivity to heat or cold, tenderness, tooth discoloration and pain.

Although Dr. Wong enjoys conducting technical dental procedures, it's the diagnostic process that really fascinates him. "Anyone can do the technical aspect," he stated. "You can do a root canal, you can do the dentistry, but it's really what you have upstairs and what you can do with it to figure out where [problems] are coming from." Boasting an impressive scholastic resume, Dr. Wong certainly has plenty going on "upstairs." He graduated with honors from the University of the Pacific College School of Dentistry and completed his AEGD at UOP and his residency at Kaiser and CPMC hospitals. After practicing as a general dentist for a few years, Dr. Wong enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, where he earned a certificate in endodontics. He received the Louis I. Grossman Award for outstanding clinical and academic achievements. He also holds a master's degree in oral biology and a certificate in histology, which he obtained in Europe.

Dr. Wong is excited about the latest advancements in dentistry and the healthcare field in general. Out of school for nearly two decades, he marvels over the new technologies that have become staples in his field. X-rays, for example, have progressed from film to a digital platform that can be enhanced and contrasted. CAT scans also provide dentists like Dr. Wong with clarity and precision down to .125mm increment slices, which reveals the entirety of the tooth to ensure diagnostic accuracy.

Recently inducted as a fellow of the International College of Dentists, he is also a fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and the College of Dentistry International for excellence in dentistry. Dr. Wong has risen to prominence within his professional and academic community. He currently serves as an associate clinical professor of endodontics at the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry and is a respected lecturer, practitioner and teacher, not only among his fellow professionals but among his patients, as well. Giving him an average of five (out of five) stars on Yelp.com, patients have said the following about Dr. Wong:

"He is clearly an expert in his field and has the most up-to-date technology. He is also very patient and kind. The [root canal] ended up being exceptionally simple with Dr. Wong's expertise."

"Dr. Wong is awesome! He made my root canal a walk in the park. Got numbed up, sat back, relaxed and watched Lost in Translation. About an hour later I was all done. Who knew a root canal could be somewhat enjoyable? Dr. Wong is ridiculously nice and so is his staff. If you have to get a root canal, Dr. Wong is your man."

For those interested parties looking ahead to a career in oral healthcare, Dr. Wong offers the following advice: "I would first tell [someone] to make sure that [they] are a people person. Make sure you're a perfectionist and make sure that you're doing it for the right reasons. Don't do it because your parents are dentists, don't do it because people tell you to be a dentist, don't do it for the prestige of being a doctor. Do it because you love what you do, you love working with your hands and you love working with people." It is his love for working with people that makes Dr. Wong a jewel in the crown of the dental field. Having emerged at the forefront of his specialty, he looks forward to playing an instrumental role in the development and advancement of endodontics for many years to come.
