MUNICH, GERMANY, June 09, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- One of the biggest musical events in southern Germany, the Munich Opera Festival, gets underway on Thursday June 24th this year.
Running until July 31st, this annual highlight of the cultural calendar is set to bring opera devotees from across the country flocking to the Bavarian capital's Nationaltheater.
The festival has taken place every summer since 1876 and offers a diverse programme of opera-themed entertainment, including performances of major works by the likes of Mozart, Puccini and Poulenc.
People using accommodation in Munich can enjoy the rarefied festival atmosphere without spending a penny by attending Opera For All, one of the festival's most popular features.
Sponsored by car giant BMW, this free outdoor concert takes place in Max-Joseph-Platz on Saturday June 26th at 20:00 local time.
The Bavarian State Orchestra is set to perform works by Richard Strauss and Claude Debussy at the concert, giving people a taste of what is to come later in the festival.
For those who want more, the festival premiere of Puccini's great opera Tosca is due to take place at the Nationaltheater on June 28th.
People unable to obtain tickets for this production can console themselves with a live transmission from the theatre lobby, which will broadcast special reports and interviews with the performers.
On Saturday July 3rd, the Nationaltheater will stage the premiere of Mozart's Don Giovanni.
Performed in Italian with German subtitles, the production runs from 19:00 to approximately 22:45 local time and ticket prices range from EUR11 to EUR163.
One of the world's most popular operatic works, Don Giovanni features a libretto by Lorenzo Da Ponte and combines comic, melodramatic and supernatural elements.
Jessica Reading, head of marketing for LateRooms, commented: "Demand for the Munich Opera Festival is always significant and we recommend that anyone considering attending should book their hotels Munchen as early as possible."
