PALO ALTO, CA, June 16, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Adding to its highly-acclaimed series of digitally-restored classic comic strips (including Little Nemo and Gasoline Alley), Sunday Press Books has recreated one of the most admired comics of all time. This 160-page Centennial Edition features the finest Krazy Kat Sunday comics, from the first black and white page in 1916 to the last color Sunday in 1944 - all in the original size and colors. The book also contains samples of George Herriman's characters for the Sunday comics from 1901 to 1906, many of which have never been reprinted before. Along with comments by editors Patrick McDonnell and Peter Maresca, the book includes contributions by Art Spiegelman and Herrriman biographer Michael Tisserand. The design is by award-winner Philippe Ghielmetti.
Almost since its inception, Krazy Kat has been called the first comic strip that reaches high art; with a sense of poetry and design never before seen in the medium, and rarely matched since. The strip's earliest proponents included Gilbert Seldes, e.e. cummings, and publisher William Randolph Hearst, who kept Krazy Kat in his newspapers for over 30 years. For the world of comics and art, the impact of Krazy Kat is immeasurable, as hundreds of artists who followed speak of being influenced and inspired by George Herriman's greatest creation.
"But do not mistake this book as simply a lesson in comics history," says co-editor and Sunday Press founder Peter Maresca. "This work is fresh and alive, and can now be enjoyed as was intended by its creator." As co-editor and Mutts creator Patrick McDonnell states in the introduction, "All great art is timeless. It's made with presence and stays in the present. George Herriman's Krazy Kat doesn't age - it just is."
Sunday Press Books is a publisher specializing in restoring and reprinting classic American comic strips in their original size and colors. Books are available from the publisher and distributed by Diamond Comics and Last Gasp of San Francisco.
