PARIS, FRANCE, June 18, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Guests at hotels in Paris may wish to head down to Le Louvre, as its first ever exhibition devoted solely to the ancient city of Meroe has gone on display.
Running until September 6th, 'Meroe - Empire of the Nile' will give visitors a greater depth of knowledge regarding the civilisation that left a powerful cultural footprint on the world.
According to the organisers of the show, Meroe was found about 125 miles north of Khartoom in Sudan and is famous for the incredible pyramids built by royalty of the region around the 3rd and 4th century AD.
More than 200 artefacts are available to view at this exhibition, which can be found on the Richelieu wing on the lower ground floor of the prestigious French art space.
"The main themes are everyday life, trades, social systems, the kings and their insignias of power, the role of the queens ('Candaces') and religious practices fusing the gods Amun from Egypt and Dionysus from Greece," noted the venue.
There is no extra charge for visiting this temporary exhibition, aside from the normal entrance fee of EUR9 (GBP7.45) to get into Le Louvre.
It is closed every Tuesday, but opens at 09:00 (local time) every other day, shutting at 18:00 on Mondays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays, and at 22:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays.
While at the landmark, people should be sure to check out Francois Morellet's L'esprit d'escalier window installation.
