LateRooms.com - Mixed Use Manhattan Opens in Madrid

Madrid is welcoming an exhibition based on the landscape of New York's Manhattan island this summer.

MADRID, SPAIN, July 07, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- An exhibition has opened in Madrid's Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia entitled Mixed Use Manhattan - Photography and Related Practices 1970s to the Present.

It looks at how the land on the celebrated island in New York is used for both commercial and residential purposes, with a focus on how this impacted on different communities.

Tourists staying at Madrid hotels can attend a workshop regarding this theme or buy a book written by the curators.

Running until September 27th in the Sabatini Building of the venue, this exhibition features a plethora of respected artists such as Stefan Brecht, David Wojnarowicz and Bernard Guillot.

"The efflorescence of the downtown art scene in the 1970s transformed Lower Manhattan from an area of abandoned and derelict buildings, razed blocks and a wasted waterfront into an increasingly vital terrain for vanguard activity," remarked the organisers.

Many artists such as Thomas Struth, Joan Jonas and Gordon Matta-Clark - all featured in this exhibition - were attracted to the vast deserted spaces, which they utilised in their creations.

The show has been curated by Lynne Cooke and Douglas Crimp and was brought to the Spanish capital with the help of the venue.

Another display that visitors should consider checking out is Drifts and Derivations, which is available to view in the same building.

Tickets cost EUR3 (GBP2.46), with the venue open every day except Tuesday from 10:00 local time. It closes at 21:00 from Monday to Saturday and 14:30 on Sundays.

For more information on this event visit the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia website or contact the venue on 91 774 10 00.
