On Friday August 27th, the orchestra is due to present the opening concert in its new season with legendary English conductor Sir Simon Rattle.

The event marks the beginning of an exciting new project for the musical ensemble, as it has committed to performing all of Gustav Mahler's symphonies by the end of 2011.

Rattle made his debut with the Berlin Philharmonic at a performance of Mahler's sixth in 1987.

As well as the celebrated Austrian composer's first symphony, the Berlin Philharmonic will play Ludwig van Beethoven's symphony number four in B flat major at the concert.

According to the orchestra, the event is designed to juxtapose their works and reveal the contrasting styles of the two great composers.

"One of the aims of this performance of Mahler's complete symphonies is to circumscribe the composer's place in the history of music," the Berlin Philharmonic website adds.

For those who cannot attend the Berliner Philharmonie concert hall next month, the performance will also be broadcast to over 30 cinema screens around Germany.

Tickets for the concert are priced between EUR30 and EUR110 (GBP24.80) and GBP90).
