LANGKAWI, MALAYSIA, July 11, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The month-long run up to Malaysia's Hari Merkada (Independence Day), held on 31 August, is organised annually by the Tourist Authority of Malaysia and is known as Merkada Month. Especially popular as a visitor destination during the festivities is the Langkawi archipelago of over 90 islands in the Andaman Sea.
Sought after in summer by crowds of Western tourists, the influx of domestic Mercada Month visitors is sure to increase demand for rooms in cheap Langkawi hotels. The annual festival brings a boost to the tourism sector across the islands, known for their beauty and beaches, especially for the parades on Independence Day itself.
Festival events in the run up to the big day itself include night markets, musical, dance and traditional cultural events, special deals at restaurants and hotels, firework displays and puppet shows. In previous years the significant number of visitors to the event topped out the already high numbers of tourists in the islands.
Visitors are expected to arrive from nearby Thailand as well as from international destinations due to advance publicity by the event's organisers. A report from DirectRooms.com indicates that the extra numbers are likely to cause a hike in bookings for cheap and mid range hotel rooms across the region.
According to Lek Boonlert, DirectRooms.com's head of marketing, "It can be tricky during summer to get suitable rooms in Langkawi. Booking well in advance is the practical way to avoid any problems."
