DALLAS, TX, August 13, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Dr. Michael Bogdan (www.drmichaelbogdan.com) a plastic surgery specialist in Dallas, is seeing more younger patients who want to update their appearance through rhinoplasty (nose surgery) procedures. According to recently released statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, rhinoplasty was the most popular cosmetic surgical procedure for teenagers in 2009.
"After about the age of 16, a person's nose is fully developed and does not continue to change much," notes Dr. Bogdan. "If a young person is unhappy with his or her appearance, it makes sense to have nose surgery sooner rather than later, because the nose will not change substantially over time and surgery is the only option to revise its look."
In 2009, almost 35,000 rhinoplasties were performed for patients ages 13 to 19. Nose surgery is one of the few cosmetic procedures that is appropriate for this age group. In fact, only 5% of all cosmetic surgery procedures are performed for patients in this age range.
"For the right patient, it makes sense to have nose surgery as soon as the nose has finished developing," says Dr. Bogdan. "But there are also many people who choose to wait. While I will perform rhinoplasty for good candidates in this age group, it's still more typical for me to see a patient in her 20s or 30s who is seriously considering this procedure."
Rhinoplasty, often called a "nose job," helps Dallas teens correct a range of cosmetic concerns with their nose, including disproportion with the rest of the face, a bump on the bridge, crookedness, width or narrowness concerns and flared or pinched nostrils. Surgery can also help to improve breathing. Nose surgery to revise the septum, the wall of cartilage that divides the nose, is known as septoplasty. A septoplasty is particularly helpful for patients who have trouble breathing due to their deviated septum, or if they have suffered an injury to the nose.
"While a rhinoplasty can improve self-confidence for younger patients in their formative years, it's not a 'quick fix' for a teen with low self esteem," adds Dr, Bogdan. "Parents should discuss the pros and cons of surgery with their teen and help them make an informed choice. In my experience, an open dialogue is so important to a satisfying outcome."
Regardless of your age, if you are considering rhinoplasty or another type of facial plastic surgery, Dr. Bogdan offers consultations to provide more information. He evaluates each patient's candidacy for the procedure and will provide his professional opinion and guidance.
