MUNICH, GERMANY, August 18, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Only 35 days remain until the start of Munich's most popular annual event - Oktoberfest.
This 16-day celebration of beer and Bavarian culture dates back to 1810 and has been attracting people to Munich hotels for decades.
As the event marks its 200th anniversary this year, the organisers have promised to deliver the biggest and best Oktoberfest experience for everyone who attends.
For this reason, the festival has been extended and will now run from September 17th to October 4th, instead of between September 18th and October 3rd as originally planned.
A number of special features have been planned to make the 2010 edition extra special, including a historic reconstruction of Oktoberfests gone by and a commemorative horse race.
This event will recall the festival's origin in the early 1800s, when a horse race was held to celebrate the royal wedding of Bavaria's Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen.
According to the organisers, these special additions to the programme will take place on September 17th, with the ceremonial tapping of the first keg of beer occurring the following day.
For many people, Oktoberfest provides the perfect excuse to eat, drink and be merry.
As well as the large number of traditional brews on offer, visitors can recharge their batteries with hearty German fare such as hendl (roast chicken), weisswurst (white sausage), reiberdatschi (potato pancakes) and sauerkraut.
The tapping of the first beer barrel is carried out by the lord mayor of Munich and is traditionally accompanied by a 12-gun salute.
During Oktoberfest, beer is served between 10:00 and 22:30 local time on weekdays, with the tents opening an hour earlier at the weekend.
Visitors are advised to arrive early if they want to get a seat, as the beer halls become increasingly crowded as the day goes on.
