Ottawa Dentist Warns about Periodontal Disease

Ottawa ON veneers provider, Dr. Pamela Li, discusses the treatment of gum disease and the dangers of leaving it untreated.

OTTAWA, ON, August 19, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Periodontal disease, or gum disease, is a bacterial infection of the gums, ligaments and bone that support the teeth and anchor them in the jaw. Usually painless until its final stages, gum disease is silent like heart disease - and can sneak up on a person.

"Prevention and treatment of periodontal disease are very important because it is a chronic inflammation of your body's tissues," notes Ottawa dentist, Dr. Pamela Li. "Unfortunately, people don't take it very seriously. They think of routine dental visits as 'just a cleaning."

Periodontal disease interacts with other conditions, including:
- Diabetes: People with diabetes are more susceptible to infections, including gum infections.
- Smoking: Being a smoker increases your risk of contracting gum disease - and lowers the chance of a successful treatment.
- Heart Disease: People with uncontrolled gum disease are more likely to have heart disease. Oral bacteria can spread elsewhere in your body - including the heart.
- Strokes: Gum disease is a risk factor for having a stroke.
- Pregnancy: Women with periodontal disease are more likely to have low-birth-weight and premature babies.
- COPD: Some experts believe the bacteria in the mouth can be aspirated into the lungs and cause pneumonia - and cause or worsen chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

"We offer conservative periodontal treatment such as cleanings, laser periodontal therapy and Arestin," says Dr. Li, an Ottawa porcelain veneers provider. The antibiotic Arestin kills bacteria living in periodontal pockets. Following a dentist's treatment, Arestin eliminates any bacteria for up to 21 days.
