LANGKAWI, MALAYSIA, August 19, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- World Tourism Day is being held in China this year, but that won't stop the locals in Langkawi from celebrating the annual occasion.
Guangdong Province will host the official event on September 27th 2010, with officials at the UN World Tourism Organisation (WTO) declaring this year's theme to be 'tourism and biodiversity'.
Secretary general of the UNWTO Taleb Rifai explained back in March that the two subjects which make up the theme are reliant on each other.
"UNWTO wishes to raise awareness and calls upon the tourism stakeholders and travellers themselves to ... safeguard the intricate web of unique species and ecosystems that make up our planet," he remarked.
The official event may be taking place a long way away from Langkawi hotels, but the tourism hotspot will still be giving its backing to the campaign.
According to the region's tourism website Visit Kedah, various fun activities and competitions related to the central theme will be organised to mark the occasion.
The UNWTO has stressed that it is keen for people from locations around the world to join in with the day's events by carrying out their own celebrations.
It has pledged to publish details of international World Tourism Day festivities on its website.
