MUNICH, GERMANY, September 01, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- An extra special Munich Marathon has been planned to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the race this year.
Taking place on Sunday October 10th, the 26-mile run is a highly popular event with both athletes and spectators.
The marathon route begins on Ackermannstrasse and works its way anti-clockwise around the city, passing through the through the English Garden and the Old Town before finishing at the Olympic Park.
According to the organisers, running the marathon can be a good way for people using Munich hotels to get to know the city.
The official website states that the route "reads in places like an excerpt from a guide book with the most beautiful attractions of the Bavarian metropolis."
Previous races have attracted up to 9,000 participants and this year's edition is expected to be particularly popular as a result of the anniversary celebrations.
A number of special events have been added to the programme this year, including a six-kilometre costume run, a half marathon and a student run.
To book their starting place in the main marathon, athletes must complete an online registration form and pay EUR65 (GBP52.90) before September 26th.
For those who prefer a short distance, the ten-kilometre run costs EUR28 to enter and the deadline is the same.
The runners will be sent off in two blocks, with the first group beginning at 10:00 local time and the second one shortly after.
On the day before the main race, the marathon's inaugural Trachtenlauf ('Folklore run') is due to take place. This event is free to enter and will see runners dressed in traditional Bavarian costume complete a short course.
Afterwards, there will be a Bavarian breakfast of veal sausage, pretzels and beer available for participants in the Olympic Park.
