PARIS, FRANCE, September 08, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- An exhibition of Camille Silvy's work entitled Photographer of Modern Life is being shown in Paris, which could prove to be a must-see for art enthusiasts heading to the French capital.
It will be on show at Jeu de Paume until October 24th 2010, with the organisers describing Silvy as one of the great French photographers of the 19th century.
Produced alongside the National Portrait Gallery in London, this is the first retrospective to focus solely on the artist and many of the images will not have been seen before.
Guests at hotels in Paris will be able to see about 150 images captured by the Frenchman, who lived from 1834 to 1910.
According to the venue, he was exceptionally talented at taking fashionable portraiture pictures and was remembered by the legendary photographer Nadar as one of the artists who first "embraced and defined the medium".
"His subjects included the modern landscape of leisure, studies of twilight, fog and sunlight, and the life of city streets. He also expertly photographed theatre, opera and how modern people wore fashionable dress," explained Jeu de Paume.
Visitors can also see an exhibition of Nadar's work while they are at the art space, which is closed on Mondays, but opens from 12:00 local time on weekdays, closing at 21:00 on Tuesdays and 19:00 from Wednesdays to Fridays. It is open between 10:00 and 19:00 at the weekend.
Entrance costs EUR7.
