BOGOTA, NJ, September 11, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Periodontal disease is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Periodontal diseases attack just below the gum; this causes the supporting tissues to break down. As the tissues are damaged it creates a deeper pocket around the tooth. Once someone has periodontal disease it's not reversible, but can be controlled. This is why it's so important to focus on healthy dental habits; it's much easier to prevent gum disease than to live with it. Dr. Sherzoy hints that being treated at once for bleeding gum disease is a smart way to prevent an unhealthy smile. For nearly 20 years, Dr. Sherzoy is known to be a talented cosmetic dentist who has helped patients regain their beautiful fresh and healthy smile.
People may not think gum disease is fatal but it is. It causes heart attacks, strokes and birth defects. There is new evidence growing that besides smoking, alcohol use and drug use during pregnancy can cause low birth weight, also periodontal disease is becoming a new risk factor. More research is needed to confirm how periodontal disease may affect pregnancy outcomes, but it appears periodontal disease increases levels of biological fluid that induces labor.
The American Academy of Periodontology, explains several theories that link periodontal disease and heart disease. One theory is that oral bacteria can affect the heart when they enter the blood stream, attaching to fatty plaques in the coronary arteries (heart blood vessels) and contributing to clot formation. Coronary artery disease is characterized by a thickening of the walls of the coronary arteries due to the buildup of fatty proteins. Blood clots can obstruct normal blood flow, restricting the amount of nutrients and oxygen required for the heart to function properly. This may lead to heart attacks and strokes.
Dr. Sherzoy agrees, "As gum disease progresses, your gums, begin to pull away from your teeth creating pockets caused by the plaque and tartar. Bacteria grow in these pockets, preventing your gums from healing, and making the problem worst. There is no way for you to clean these pockets in your gums at home. However, at Bogota Dental we can safely remove the bacteria and allow your gums to heal again. If left untreated, gum disease will begin destroying tissue and even your jawbone."
The link between gum disease and health problems is clear; 85 percent of adults in the US have some form of gum problems, from gingivitis (gum disease) and red, puffy, or bleeding gums to severe periodontal disease leading to tooth loss. Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. Even if you don't notice any symptoms, you may still have some degree of gum disease. In some people, gum disease may affect only certain teeth, such as the molars. Only a dentist or a Periodontist can recognize and determine the progression of gum disease.
