He undertook his formal music studies at Munich's Hochschule fur Musik and went on to win the Nurnberg Meistersinger Competition in 1993.

Among the classic roles he has taken on are Don Jose in Bizet's Carmen, Alfredo in La Traviata and Cavaradossi in Puccini's Tosca.

The Teatro de la Maestranza has described how its 2010-11 opera season is being "dramatically enhanced" by Kaufmann's presence on the programme, which should show tourists that it will be a special performance.

Tickets for this spectacular concert cost between EUR20 (GBP16.75) and EUR34 and are available from the box office or online, with the show kicking off at 20:30 local time on the night.
