LateRooms.com - Grab a Bargain at Munich's Kirchweih Dult

The historic Kirchweih Dult offers stalls of vintage items, fairground rides and other activities at the Mariahilfplatz in Munich.

MUNICH, GERMANY, September 22, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Next month's Kirchweih Dult could be on the itinerary for holidaymakers spending time in Munich hotels.

Taking place between October 16th and 24th, this large street market is one of the three Auer Dult events held in the Bavarian capital each year.

The name of the event translates as "church anniversary fair", although the word "dult" comes from an old German term meaning "observance". It was originally a fair based on ecclesiastical celebration, although it is now more associated with the large of number of stalls selling vintage crockery, rare books, beauty products and knick-knacks.

A visit to the Kirchweih Dult, which is held at the central Mariahilfplatz, could be a good opportunity for travellers to enjoy an authentic taste of Munich life, as well as pick up a bargain or souvenir from their trip.

The fair is also the place to go for traditional German costume, with some vendors offering lederhose or dirndl to suit those who fancy getting into the spirit of the occasion.

However, the event is more than a vast jumble sale, with plenty of other entertainment to keep visitors entertained.

As well as acrobats and clowns, the market includes fairground attractions such as a merry-go-round, bumper cars and shooting galleries, along with a diverse range of food and drink stalls.

Children's activities such as horseback rides and puppet shows are another feature of the event.

Hungry shoppers will find plenty of traditional Bavarian snacks on offer, including fish-on-a-stick, barbecued sausage and caramelised almonds.

With records of the fair going back to 1310, the Auer Dulten continues to be one of Munich's most popular events and three markets have taken place in the city each year since 1905.
