2010-2011 Concert Season to Culminate in Composer's Homecoming Recital, Marking the Ten-Year Anniversary of Her Musical Pursuits Overseas

    BOSTON, MA, September 30, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The 2010-2011 concert season brings crucial and diverse opportunities for composer Jean Y. Foo to challenge the status quo and to reach greater visions in the global contemporary music scene. Musicians, scholars and audiences alike are anticipating her 2011 homecoming recital in Singapore, which will mark the ten-year anniversary of the commencement of her overseas musical pursuits.

"The time has come for me to move forward with what I have always believed to be my power, role and goal as a composer. This mission, therefore, is to set forth the creation of a musical thought, model or genre by revolutionizing the compositional craft through my musical voice," comments Jean Y. Foo. "This multi-dimensional revolution - from a philosophical, emotional, spiritual, aesthetic and performance standpoint - starts with knowing the self (the creator) and its context in society, past, present and the future. My approach will contribute towards mankind's evolution in their understanding of music. My musical voice should fulfill this mission."

Bringing those visions to fruition is Ms. Foo's appointment this season as Composer-in-Residence with the Arts Sphere Chinese Chamber Ensemble of Singapore. The residency's sold-out opening concert, graced by many prominent musical guests on July 28, demonstrates great support for this composer-ensemble collaboration, which is serving as a platform for Ms. Foo to create works that feature the strength and versatility of Arts Sphere at its concerts throughout the season.

"For Jean to conceptualize and lead our first Composer-in-Residence program is a milestone in Art Sphere's commitment to delivering high-level and thoughtful reflections on Chinese music. This is especially crucial for the development of contemporary Chinese chamber music locally and globally," comments Dedric Wong De Li, President of the ensemble. Outside of her home country, Ms. Foo's commissioned and requested works are scheduled for premieres and repeat performances by various musical groups. London's rarescale will perform a new piece for alto flute and soprano as a featured premiere, and another work for the guqin and the 45-member Shenzhen Senior High School Lily Children's Choir will premiere this season as well. On October 12, the closing concert of the double bass competition for the 4th Zhongyin Cup will showcase Ms. Foo's signature interpretation of the ancient tunes "Jiu Kuang" and "Mei Hua San Nong."

Singapore-born Chinese-American composer Jean Y.
