Miami Orthodontist Utilizes Invisalign to Treat Orthognathic Surgical Patients

    MIAMI, FL, October 16, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ - Miami orthodontist Dr. Stephen Grussmark recently completed orthodontic treatment by using Invisalign on an 18-year-old patient who underwent surgery to correct an underbite.

Grussmark said this patient is a prime example of how patients on a surgery path still can benefit from Invisalign treatment.

Patients who are thought to be surgical candidates often can be treated with Invisalign instead of requiring surgery, Grussmark said. But for those who need surgical correction, Invisalign can be used during the process leading up to the actual surgical procedure.

"It is important for patients who are on a surgery track to understand that while Invisalign treatment can't always eliminate the need for surgery, it still can be used to prepare for surgery and to complete orthodontic treatment afterward," Grussmark said.

An oral surgeon requires braces to be placed on a patient's teeth prior to performing orthognathic surgery, said Grussmark, a Miami Invisalign Elite Premier Provider. The braces can be placed just prior to surgery. In this patient's case, he was treated with Invisalign for six months before surgery.

"Every surgical case requires preliminary treatment prior to surgical correction,"he said. "The jaws won't meet properly because the teeth are not in the right place, so we have to get the teeth in proper position so that when the surgery is done, the teeth will meet."

About six weeks after surgery when the patient returned to Grussmark's Miami orthodontics office, Grussmark gave him the choice of resuming Invisalign treatment for an additional four months, or keeping the brackets in place for four more months to complete treatment.

The patient chose to keep the braces until his treatment was completed, which occurred in September.

"He was in orthodontic treatment for ten months, and he is the best-looking kid now," Grussmark said.
