Brighton: A seaside town for the hip and trendy, Brighton is an excellent place to visit for a day trip and is particularly suitable for new young drivers looking to spread their wings. Brighton is one of Britain's top ten visitor destinations and about 6.5 million of them go for a day trip there.
The town has many attractions including the famous Brighton Pier, offering all the traditional British seaside fun that you'd expect including arcades, candy floss and fish 'n' chips. You can visit the Brighton Pavilion, a spectacular building that houses furniture and works of art owned by the Queen. Brighton also has a Sea Life centre, the Brighton Museum and many excellent restaurants, pubs and clubs.
When to visit: Brighton has attractions available all year around, but it is best to visit between April and October, to avoid heavy blustery sea breezes. Be aware that during summer, Brighton Beach can be very crowded at weekends.
How to get there: Brighton can be reached by taking the A23 and is about 25 minutes from the M25. Trains leave from London Victoria every 55 minutes or so.
Newquay: This Cornish town is the surf capital of the UK and features three beaches, Watergate Bay, Fistral and Lusty Glaze; all favourites with surfers. However, it's not just a place for surfers; you can sail, dive, sunbathe or maybe just explore the town, if that is more your thing. We don't offer surf board insurance, but the money you'll save if you buy your car insurance from us will mean that you'll have some extra cash in your pocket to buy the gear to make you look like a pro!
Newquay is host to many surf and water-sport national competitions, including the Boardmasters, a round of the ASP World Qualifying Series. This is usually held in the first week of August and has an excellent music festival to accompany it.
When to visit: To get the most out of what Newquay has to offer, visit during the summer months.
How to get there: Take the M5 to Exeter, then join the A38 into Cornwall and follow the signs to Newquay. If you wish to travel by train to Newquay, contact the National Rail Enquires Service to find the latest times and routes.
Stonehenge: Stonehenge is an ancient monument, built in approximately 3100 BC. Its function is unclear and it has been said that it was used by Stone-age man for everything from sacrifices to even astronomy. Druids hold ceremonies at the site every year or so in addition to the many visitors from all over the world that come every day. A classic cinema moment in the National Lampoon's European Vacation saw the Griswald family drive their car into the stone circle and destroy thousands of years of history. Let's hope they had fully comprehensive car insurance!
When to visit: Stonehenge is open to visitors all year round.
How to get there: From the M25, turn off at junction 12 to take the M3 to Basingstoke. Turn off the M3 at junction 8 and onto the A303 to Andover. Stonehenge is right next to the A303 and is well signposted.
The Eden Project: The Eden Project, near St Austell in Cornwall, is a collection of the largest conservatories in the world. These massive 'Biodomes' contain a rainforest, a Mediterranean landscape and some stunning gardens. The experience of visiting the Eden Project is designed to both impress and educate the visitor about the world around them. Additionally, the Eden Project plays host to many high profile acts from the world of music.
When to visit: The Eden Project is open all year round with the exception of Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and the 24th and the 25th January.
How to get there: Take the M5 down to Exeter, then pick up the A38 and follow it into Cornwall.
Formula 1 British Grand Prix: If you're a learner driver and want to see how the professionals do it, The Formula One British Grand Prix is the event to attend for high speed four-wheeled thrills. Held at the superb Silverstone circuit in Northamptonshire, the Grand Prix is a round of the Formula One World Championship and features British aces Jensen Button and Lewis Hamilton going head to head with the likes of Fernando Alonso, Marc Webber and Sebastian Vettel. With Formula 1 drivers having such a reckless reputation when it comes to everyday driving I wonder what their car insurance premiums look like!
When to visit: The 2011 British Grand Prix will be held from the 8th to the 10th July, with the race being held on Sunday the 10th.
How to get there: Take the M40 and look for the Silverstone signs. After leaving the M40, take the A43 and follow the signs.
