Glenda D. Smith Honored by Cambridge Who's Who for Excellence in Telecommunications

Glenda D. Smith, former Executive Director for Verizon's system integration and testing organization, values people's teamwork abilities just as much as she does their technical expertise. In her field, each aspect works synergistically with the other, as she continually engages them in effective team building. As Executive Director, Ms. Smith is responsible for testing and certifying Verizon's retail orders, ordering, managing national provisioning and billing systems, developing planning strategies and performing software integration testing. Among her accomplishments, Ms. Smith was instrumental in implementing a new ordering and billing system in March of 1998 for Verizon. This included certification from the Bell Atlantic company in 2000, enabling them to order provisioning systems from the company to enter the long-distance business.

With more than 32 years of experience in the field - and four years of experience as executive director - she has achieved an honest and straightforward approach to communication, a quality that has earned her the respect and cooperation of her employees. Since the job requires that she accomplish much in a limited amount of time, she has developed and sharpened her people assessment skills, strategically placing them in positions that will allow them to reach their full potential.

Prior to her current position, Ms. Smith taught middle school chemistry and biology for five years. She attributes her success to her determination, learning skills and the support she receives from her colleagues. In the near future, Ms. Smith envisions an occupation where she is able to help people - whether by operating a local nonprofit organization dedicated to the improvement of children and adults, or working in health care. Additionally, she has a strong imperative to help women who are abused by their life partners and is figuring out ways to reach out to them.

Ms. Smith received a bachelor's degree in biology and chemistry in 1976 from Lincoln University. She is a member of the Philadelphia chapter of the Black Data Processing Associates. In her spare time, Ms. Smith enjoys spending time with her grandchildren, visiting museums and aquariums, traveling, and reading.
