It is winter in Tucson at the time of the Marathon, with temperatures ranging in the 30s at the start time, heading up to around 65 to 70 Fahrenheit by around 11 am. The marathon course is generally downhill, with the exception of a few small hills located around the point of the 1st and 10th miles, and some rolling hills and inclines located between the 2nd and 5th miles and between the 10th and 13th miles.

The marathon begins at the Old West historical town of Oracle, winds through the desert (on actual paved roads, however) and finally reaches its conclusion at the Coronado Middle School, which is situated just off of E. Wilds Road. The course is widely regarded by experienced marathon runners as both one of the easiest courses in which to try and gain a personal best time and one of the prettiest and most scenic such courses to run.
