Uncovering Motivation is the Key to Achieving New Year's Resolutions

A new book shows readers how to actually keep or achieve their New Year's resolutions. The key, according to the author, is uncovering one's motivation through using a person's true values.

ATLANTA, GA, December 02, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- With the intent to signify a new beginning, people all over the world typically make resolutions, or promises, to start or stop something at New Year's, such as manage debt, lose weight, quit smoking, and get a better job. The problem is that most people fail to maintain or even begin their promised transformation because they don't have the proper motivation, according to Annette R. Johnson, author of the new book, "What's Your Motivation?: Identifying and Understanding What Drives You" (2nd Edition).

"Most of us either don't know our motivation or how it affects us, and being unaware makes change, especially permanent transformation, almost impossible," says Johnson, a former university instructor who holds a master's degree in journalism and a minor degree in psychology. Her book uses elements of psychology and principles from the Bible to cover topics separately from the most important areas of life, including money, love, marriage, health, communication, children, worship, and work. This second edition of the book incorporates self-examinations, charts, and diagrams to help readers understand and identify their motivators, as well as their motivation.

"People want change, especially at New Year's, but, in order to be successful, they must know what is driving the problem," says Johnson. "The problem is that most of our lives are out of balance. We are too much of one thing and not enough of the other." Excessive behaviors, procrastination or lack of consistency are trademarks of a life out of balance, according to the Atlanta author. The book helps to bring people's lives back into balance by first helping readers identify what motivator (body, mind, heart or spirit) drives most of their behavior. Using appealing anecdotes and examples, the book ultimately helps readers to identify problems in specific areas and then explains how to fix them using the "Value Matrix." The author created the Value Matrix so people understand exactly what triggers them and why some things are unable to motivate them.

The first edition of "What's Your Motivation?", written in 2003, was mainly autobiographical and explained how to identify one's motivation but not necessarily how to change it. This revised and expanded second edition includes a whole new chapter on doing just that and focuses more accurately on the reader. It also includes a new chapter on friends. Published in November 2010, the book is available in paperback (Allwrite Publishing, $14.95, 222 pages, ISBN: 978-0974493510) at Barnes & Noble and on Amazon.com. It is also available as an Adobe eBook from online retailers such as Powells.com, Ebookmall.com, Diesel-ebooks.com, and Booksonboard.com.
