The unusual display sees Chereau given free reign to interpret a variety of pieces within the Louvre collection and from other institutions.

According to the organisers, the artist aims to connect visitors' emotions with the work on show and imagine what a person might do if left to their own devices.

They added: "Chereau stages some 40 paintings from the collections of the Musee du Louvre, the Centre Georges-Pompidou and the Musee d'Orsay ... using their interplay to give new expression to the stories told."

Visitors attending from Paris hotels will note that the exhibition, which is on display until January 31st and can be found on the second floor of the Sully Wing, is split into three sections.

While the first zone concentrates on Chereau's work, the second and third areas look at the sketches behind the show and a selection of images from the artist's friend Nan Goldin's personal diary.

The Louvre is open from 09:00 local time every day - except for Tuesdays, when it is closed - and shuts at 22:00 on Wednesdays and Fridays and 18:00 every other day.

Admission to the exhibition is included within the general entrance price of EUR9.50 (GBP8.10).
