PHUKET, THAILAND, December 27, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- The Vientiane based team is a mix of foreign residents and Lao nationals and is the only sports team in the country to play this exciting variant of soccer.
The Lao Elephants train on Wednesdays and Sundays in preparation for a busier match schedule. Since the team club formed in 2007, the Lao elephants have fared quite well in Asian Australian Rules Football competitions in Hanoi, Phnom Penh and Singapore by beating more experienced Vietnamese and Thai teams.
In May 2009, the Lao Elephants, or Phants as they are more usually known, offered visitors to Laos the chance of witnessing a match between the north and south team squads. Travellers residing at Vientiane hotels for the New Year holiday will have the chance of seeing the Lao Elephants perform their magic at the Lao capital city's sports stadium.
Australian Rules football differs from normal soccer in that players are allowed to move the ball with any part of their body, although most movements are managed by kicking and running with it. No throwing is allowed. The fixture on January 2nd 2011 will provide a rare opportunity of witnessing this exciting sport played in Asia.
Lek Boonlert, marketing head of DirectRooms.com remarked: "Unless people have access to satellite television, the only way of seeing Australian Rules Football in Laos is in matches and training sessions. The Lao Elephants fixture is sure to draw spectators for its novelty value alone. Sports fans should check their online hotel options."
